We are pleased to inform you that the call for papers is open for the submission of original and unpublished articles to issue nº. 16 of the journal Cuestiones de Género, which will deal with “The female agency in audiovisual narratives” and will be coordinated by María Teresa Vera Balanza, Elia Saneleuterio, María Jesús Ruiz Muñoz and Daniele Leoz.

In the last decade, the audiovisual industry has undergone profound transformations in the forms of production, distribution and consumption of content. Furthermore, in the context of the fourth wave of feminism, films and series for television and VOD platforms starring women have proliferated. The case of series denotes a particular interest of television networks and VOD platforms for this type of content and the audience they are aimed at (Ruiz Muñoz and Pérez-Rufí, 2020). We are not only at a particularly significant moment from the point of view of the creation and dissemination of audiovisual works with female protagonists, but also of the visibility of the discourse of women directors, screenwriters and other audiovisual media workers both in the field of industry as well as in the media’s own agenda, and even through contributions to its own genealogy that highlight the importance of the contributions of predecessors / pioneers (Cascajosa, 2015; Etura, 2018; García Jiménez, 2019).

On this matter, there is also a growing interest in the academic environment for the analysis of audiovisual discourse from a gender perspective (Lacalle and Gómez, 2016; Coronado and Galán, 2017; Hidalgo-Marí, 2017; Bandrés Goldáraz, 2019; Sánchez and Calderón, 2020) and for the (re) construction of the History of Cinema and Television, valuing the contributions of women audiovisual creators (Núñez, Silva and Vera, 2012; Cascajosa and Martínez, 2016; López Rodríguez and Raya Bravo, 2019; Núñez Domínguez and Vera Balanza, 2020).

Throughout these years, the study of advertising discourse from a gender perspective has also been consolidated (Velandia-Morales and Rincón, 2014; Cabrera Montúfar, 2016; Vargas Ortiz, 2020) and works focused on analyzing audiovisual narrative from this approach in other areas such as video clips (Monedero, 2020), video art (Herrero, 2016) and social networks (Egido and Eiroa, 2017; Barrachina, 2019; Sádaba and Barranquero, 2019).

For all the above, for this issue, research articles are requested that contribute to an evaluation and also diagnosing the current situation from the perspective of the “female agency” (Butler, 1988), that is, of the analysis of the discourse considering the subject’s ability to choose and their resistance strategies in adverse contexts. This is a theoretical construct that was applied in the first instance to the category “woman”, but for years it has also been applied to other excluded groups whose claims explain that feminist analyzes have been integrated into a broader perspective, called “of gender” (Saneleuterio and López-García-Torres, 2019).

Those who are interested in contributing an article to this monographic issue may do so through our web platform by registering as “Author” and attaching their article at the same time. People who are already registered on the platform can submit their article from their account.

We also remind you that we have the “Open Tribune” section, which welcomes contributions with a different theme from that of the monograph, as well as a section for making books and films reviews.

The deadline for receiving articles for this issue ends on February 28, 2021 and we would be very grateful for your collaboration.
